PORTLAND — A fire broke out Friday at a power substation west of Portland, sending a plume of black smoke into the sky.

Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said Friday afternoon the blaze was contained, but firefighters and Bonneville Power Administration staff continued to monitor it.

The fire started at about 12:45 p.m. With the smoke visible from heavily traveled Highway 26, images of the plume lit up social media. The plume was visible from Clark County.

Bryan Noonan said he was stepping out of the cafeteria at Intel when he saw flames tower above the substation. “We watched it for a good 20 to 30 minutes and it wasn’t going down at all.”
