LA PUSH — The Coast Guard is working to contain a diesel spill that resulted when a fishing vessel sunk near La Push.
The Guard’s Puget Sound incident management group received a report on Thursday that a vessel had gone down and a diesel sheen could be seen.
Workers at Station Quillayute River reported that during a morning check they noticed that the 35-foot fishing vessel Nellie M had sunk in a local marina.
Officials did not immediately know how much diesel spilled but the vessel had about 600 gallons of fuel onboard.
Since the area is a National Marine Sanctuary, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been notified. The cause of the sinking is under investigation.
