SEATTLE — A company that designed equipment for use in developing countries that turns human waste into drinking water and electrical energy will build a headquarters in Sedro-Woolley.

The Seattle Times reported that Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill allowing the Port of Skagit to lease the site of the old Northern State Hospital to Janicki Bioenergy.

Construction of the facilities for manufacturing and office will start in 2016.

The new campus will sit on 225 acres at the site of a former mental hospital that closed in 1973. Brenda Thomas, a Janicki spokeswoman, says eventually the facilities will have between 500 and 1,000 workers.

Janicki gained attention in January when Bill Gates posted a video of him drinking water from the OmniProcessor, the machine that processes sewage.
