Weather Eye: Showers in forecast, with clear skies set for a return Thursday

The marine layer was enhanced Monday by an incoming weather system, making the usual morning clouds linger well into the afternoon.

Today, we’ll see showers, and maybe some thunder and hail before all is said and done. That pattern will carry over into Wednesday. Snow will fall down to the pass levels but nothing is expected to stick on roadways.

So the weather pattern keeps sending us these cold upper-level lows, occasionally bringing a few inches of snow in the higher mountains. At Timberline, there is more than 48 inches of snow on the slopes above the lodge. Spring skiing continues.Thursday through Sunday will likely bring the return of fair weather. Next week, forecast charts show an unsettled weather pattern that will bring showers and cooler weather. Overall, however, the Climate Prediction Center says that May will be drier than normal.

April rainfall in Vancouver totaled 1.79 inches, and we could be close to that in May if forecasts pan out.The past weekend was June-like, with pleasant afternoon temperatures in the 70s. As another cold trough of low pressure moves in for next week, we will hope it holds off until Monday, so Mother’s Day will be halfway decent.Going by past history, I can almost guarantee that the following Saturday, May 16, will be nice weather-wise. Why? That is the annual Parade of Bands in Hazel Dell. It hardly ever rains on that day. In 40 years of parades, only a handful have seen wet streets.

Keep dry, dashing among the scattered showers.
