BELLINGHAM — A 38-year-old woman is facing charges after investigators watched her set fire to her home while her 12-year-old daughter slept inside.

The Bellingham Herald reports that Casey A. Evans was booked into Whatcom County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of arson.

The sheriff’s office and Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office had been investigating a series of small fires near Evans’ home. Officials say Evans was the one who called authorities about these fires, which included a utility pole, a transport trailer and multiple grass fires.

Police say they witnessed Evans walk to the side of her house then back inside repeatedly before flames appeared. Detectives found a lighter inside Evans’ pocket and ashes in spots surrounding the house.

Evans denied setting the fires and would not talk to deputies.
