STEVENSON — Officials say a freight train struck and killed a 54-year-old man walking on the tracks near Stevenson in southwest Washington.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday about a mile east of town.

He says the crew of the BNSF freight train sounded the horn but the person was still struck.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified the man as Russell Stotts of Stevenson. He had been fishing with friends along the Columbia River and had left the group to return to his vehicle.

The office says a witness told police that Stotts didn’t move or appear to acknowledge the horn as the train approached.

No one else was hurt.
