PORTLAND — Portland police say an officer has shot and wounded someone wielding a knife and “coming at” police.

Authorities say in a news release the shooting happened about 2:15 p.m. Sunday at a Portland residence.

Officers initially responded to reports that the subject had been cutting himself.

That was quickly followed by a report that a woman said someone with a knife had broken into her house.

She was able to escape with her two young children.

Police say that after the family emerged safely, the suspect “still armed with the knife, abruptly left the house and came at the officers.”

At first, police fired a less-lethal beanbag at the suspect, but when that didn’t work, an officer fired her gun as the person came within a short distance of her.

The wounded suspect was hospitalized but there we no word on a condition.
