EUGENE, Ore. — Firefighters spent time this weekend warning residents of southeast Eugene about wildfire preparedness and prevention.

People were told to prepare for the worst. That part of the city is particularly at risk because of its elevation, narrow streets, large number of trees and the recent drought.

The event was held in a grocery store parking lot, and some people only stopped by because their kids wanted to see the fire truck and a Dalmatian named Casey.

Once there, they were told to remove or trim as many flammable plants and trees around houses as possible, creating easy access to homes in case of emergency.

Residents were also urged to prepare a booklet with key information, such as medication, insurance details and emergency contact numbers.

Deputy Fire Marshal Amy Linder said the department will continue outreach efforts as the Northwest heads into its annual wildfire season.
