Two people were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 when a driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel early Tuesday.

Daniel Cortez, 16, of Vancouver was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 north on I-5 near the Fourth Plain Boulevard exit at about 12:40 a.m. when he fell asleep, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The truck then left the roadway and hit a tree, troopers reported.

Cortez and a passenger, Frany Gutierrez Resendiz, 38, of Vancouver, were both injured and taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. Cortez was treated and released, and Gutierrez Resendiz was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday.

State patrol said that Cortez faces charges of second-degree negligent driving and having no valid operator’s license.
