Claim denied for woman with flooded basement

CAMAS — A Camas woman whose basement flooded in heavy Halloween rains was denied a payment from the city’s insurer this week.

Debbie Hinesley said that means the $20,000 in repairs will have to come out of her pocket since her Greeley Street house is not eligible for flood insurance.

Hinesley said the flood was caused by a backed-up storm drain up the hill that sent water into her basement for the first time in the 30 years she has lived there. While she faulted the city for failing to keep the drain clear, city officials said the massive rainfall in such a short amount of time overwhelmed the system.

The Washington Cities Insurance Authority handles all claims against Camas and other cities in its statewide insurance pool.
