WASHINGTON — The National Zoo says its beloved panda cub Bei Bei has taken his first steps.

The zoo says in a news release that the cub took his first steps Monday, but it may take a bit more time for Bei Bei to get the hang of walking. The floor of the enclosure he is in is smooth and doesn’t provides much traction.

The zoo says that the cub, who was born Aug. 22, now weighs just under 12 pounds, his ear canals are open and he is starting to respond to noise. During his last examination, vets tested his leg strength and checked his teeth.
