Letter: Consideration not given to veterans

By Raymond E. Smith, Vancouver
Published: November 14, 2015, 6:00am

I am a veteran. The lack of help for veterans goes all the way down to the city level of government. My neighbor and I have on-street parking only. My neighbor is a Marine who served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam. He now has to use crutches to slowly and laboriously walk. The farther the walk the more pain.

The problem is that the city of Vancouver, in its vast wisdom, made street parking a two-hour limit here. Yes, resident passes are free but your parking spot is up for grabs, thus on numerous occasions my neighbor has had to walk farther than necessary to get to his apartment.

I went to City Hall three years ago and had a meeting with an official with the city’s parking enforcement department. I explained the circumstances and requested that the city make a parking spot just for my neighbor. They flatly refused, thus refusing to help a veteran who served to give others the safety that we currently have. Thanks for nothing Vancouver, Washington.
