Letter: Hitler claim only stifles discussion

What is wrong with the way people debate an issue today? Look no further than Pat Gordon’s Nov. 10 letter, “Rants sound familiar.”

Gordon’s personal disagreement with certain viewpoints is escalated to destructive proportions. Gordon dismisses scientific evidence regarding climate change as “rants,” and dismisses valid concerns regarding gun violence as being akin to propaganda used by Hitler.

This kind of histrionic demonization of open dialogue is destructive to the fabric of what America stands for: the right to be respected and the right to disagree without fear of violence, defamation, and hatred. Hitler’s legacy was based on hatred; let’s keep that sentiment out of our American dialogue.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
