PORTLAND — More than 100 silhouettes have been put up across Portland to mark deaths from car crashes.
KOIN-TV reports that the silhouettes are marked with dates of death and SafeStreetsPDX.
The displays mark the deaths of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. Organizer Susan Kubota said in a press release that she wants the ghostly shapes to serve as a reminder that being inattentive or reckless while driving can have serious consequences.
Data from the city of Portland says 26 people have died in vehicular crashes since January 1.
The Portland Bureau of Transportations says it is trying to improve safety and move toward zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in the next 10 years. It calls the goal “Vision Zero.”
