Improbable run has Clark volleyball in title match

Penguins to play Blue Mountain for NWAC crown

Since losing its opening match to Walla Walla 20-18 in a fifth set at the NWAC Championships, the Clark College volleyball team has been on a roll.

The Penguins have gone 6-0 in loser-out matches since Thurday’s opener and now find themselves in the title match.

Clark (26-15) will face Blue Mountain (41-9) at 2 p.m. today in Tacoma, needing to beat the Timberwolves of Pendleton, Ore., twice to take the title.

Clark ran the table on Saturday, defeating Bellevue (2-1), Walla Walla (2-0), Tacoma (2-1) and finally Linn-Benton (2-1).

After losing the first set to Bellevue, the Penguins recovered for a 22-25, 25-22, 15-6 win. Janessa Mast had 13 kills, Kinsey Pease 19 assists and 10 digs, and Meghan turner 17 digs.

Avenging it’s opening loss, Clark rolled through Walla Walla 25-13, 25-17. Mast had 16 digs and Turner 10.

Clark held off Tacoma 25-21, 16-25, 15-13 with 12 kills from Livia Strandberg, 19 assists from Gauleighyan Eastman and 13 digs by Turner.

Clark had to rally for its final win, beating Linn-Benton 14-25, 25-20, 15-13. Eastman had 16 assists and 10 digs, Mast had 13 digs and Turner 11 digs.

Basketball

WOMEN: Clark 68, Whatcom 66 — The Penguins picked up their first win of the season, beating the Orcas at the Yakima Tip-off Tournament.

Caylee Newsom had 19 points, Kendyl Cone had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Brean Nueku had 17 points for the Penguins (1-1).

Clark will take on Yakima Valley at 11 a.m. today in the consolation final.
