A Vancouver man accused of robbing a Chase Bank branch near the Westfield Vancouver mall Tuesday afternoon is being held without bail until he can make a first appearance in Clark County Superior Court on Monday.

Ted W. Washington III, 20, was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree robbery and second-degree theft. However, Judge Scott Collier ordered he come back after he’s been interviewed to determine whether he qualifies for a court-appointed attorney. Collier set a no-bail hold on Washington until his court appearance.

The bank, at 8203 N.E. Vancouver Mall Drive, reported the robbery at 1:36 p.m. Witnesses said a man, later identified as Washington, entered the bank, stated that he had a gun and demanded money from a teller. The teller gave Washington $3,332, and he fled the building, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Responding officers then received information that Washington may have entered the mall, according to the Vancouver Police Department. Officers searched the mall and took Washington into custody inside one of the mall’s stores around 2:30 p.m.

No one was hurt during the incident, police said.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said the mall remained open during the search.

Court records do not indicate whether all of the money was recovered.
