TACOMA — Two girls crossing the street on their way to Mason Middle School were hit by a car and seriously injured Friday morning, Tacoma police reported.

The incident occurred about 7:50 a.m. at North 21st and Monroe streets. Both girls were taken to a local hospital for treatment, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The 32-year-old man driving the car that hit the girls was interviewed by police at the scene, Cool said. An investigation was ongoing, she said.

Mason principal Patrice Sulkosky sent a message home to parents, saying the girls’ injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
