Letter: Minimize attention given shooter

By Bob Greenwald, Vancouver

The recent school shooting in Roseburg, Ore., was a horrendous tragedy. Many lives changed forever because some sick-minded coward wanted to beat the number of kills of the previous sick-minded coward and go out with everyone knowing his name. The news media really needs to rethink the way they help these people get notoriety.

Does the public really need to know how many guns and how much ammunition this idiot had before he got enough gumption to go out and cut down unarmed men and women just so he could get his name in the paper or on television? Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin in Roseburg was right when he said that he did not even want to mention the shooter’s name.

Come on, news people. Play these nuts down. Don’t give them the space they want.

One simple sentence would suffice: “Another coward (insert name of shooter) is gone and good riddance.”
