FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Police at Northern Arizona University have filed a formal complaint charging a freshman with second-degree murder in a campus shooting.

Steven Jones initially was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Colin Brough following a confrontation last Friday. Police wrote in a complaint released Wednesday that Jones didn’t act with premeditation.

The complaint also expands the number of assault charges against the 18-year-old Jones from three to six — two for each of three other students who were injured in the shooting.

Jones’ attorney, Burges McCowan, declined comment Wednesday.

Funeral services for Brough are scheduled Friday in Annapolis, Maryland, where he attended high school and played lacrosse. The 20-year-old Brough graduated from Castle Rock High School in Castle Rock, Colorado, in 2013.
