Letter: Hitler was no friend to democracy

Richard Willerton, in his Aug. 31 letter “Civilization relies on coal and gas,” implied that Adolf Hitler was some kind of leftist by reminding us that the word Nazi is short for National Socialist Democratic Worker. In fact, “Nazi” only stands for “National Socialist.” Democratic workers are not represented by the word. Actually, the only reason the word socialist is in there is because Hitler wanted to appeal to workers while he was rising to power. One of the first things he did upon taking power was destroy the working class, of course.

Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of history knows that Nazism arose as a reaction against Communism with the declared purpose of destroying it.

I might also point out that it was the anti-Communist capitalists, not the Communists, who rescued Nazis after World War II and employed them with the CIA for use against the Soviet Union.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
