Letter: Older cars still running earn a pass

Is it really necessary to have to smog check your car for 25 years? Let’s be serious here, folks, this length of time for smog check is really just a way for Washington state to collect more money. Very few cars last that long and if they do it’s because the owner has taken good care of his vehicle.

A period of 15 years or even 10 years is far more reasonable because if a car doesn’t pass, the owner will be forced to buy a new car. It will create far more pollution to build a car than to let one that doesn’t meet requirements, but continues to run good, live as it most likely doesn’t see a lot of miles, which is why it lasts this long.
