PORTLAND — A Portland man who failed to register as a sex offender following a sex abuse conviction in 1994 is facing new charges of rape and assault.

KOIN-TV reports that 48-year-old Robert Shelby appeared in court Monday on several charges related to the March 28 incident.

Officers say they had responded to a Portland neighborhood to a report that a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man who broke into her apartment.

Court documents say the woman identified Shelby after police showed her his mugshot.

Police say Shelby hadn’t registered as a sex offender since September 2014. He was convicted of second-degree sex abuse in 1994.

Police say Shelby denied the allegations against him in an interview with detectives.
