OLYMPIA — Officials have appealed a Pierce County court commissioner’s order that could result in the new head of Western State Hospital being jailed.

The commissioner ruled Friday that Cheryl Strange, the psychiatric hospital’s CEO, either admit a patient — as previously ordered by a court — or report to jail by noon Wednesday.

The patient has been held in a general hospital because there aren’t enough beds at Western State.

The Attorney General’s Office said Tuesday it has filed an appeal of the commissioner’s order, but it declined to release a copy of the appeal because documents in the case are confidential under state law.

Strange has said she doesn’t plan to move the man up the waiting list for beds at Western State because other patients may be sicker and have priority.

Gov. Jay Inslee appointed Strange to take over the troubled hospital in April.
