GRESHAM, Ore. — Gresham police say an officer and a suspect were injured during an exchange of gunfire that followed a late-night traffic crash.

The officer is from the Fairview Police Department. He’s assigned to a regional gang enforcement team and responded when a vehicle crashed into a fence in Gresham.

Officer John Rasmussen with Gresham police said Thursday morning that the driver ran from the scene. A radio call indicating the Fairview officer and his partner found the driver was quickly followed by “shots fired” and “officer hit.”

Rasmussen says the officer and the suspect are expected to survive. Their names have not been released.

Rasmussen says information about how many shots were fired will be released later.
