Letter: What does Herrera Beutler believe?

By Malcolm M. McCay, VANCOUVER
Published: August 7, 2016, 6:00am

I have spent almost six years trying to understand what my U. S. representative believes.

In 2011, I sent a letter to Jaime Herrera Beutler’s office. Months later, I called the office seeking a response. Months later, I went to the Officer’s Row office and asked in person. A few weeks later, I got a carefully written letter telling me nothing about what she believes.

I do not get invited to her “social circle coffees,” so I do not get to speak with her.

She refuses to meet with the public she claims to represent, perhaps because she will get asked real questions. The last sentence would be unfair if I had any idea why she voted about 50 times to take health coverage from two females in my family as I pay for premium coverage to keep her miracle daughter alive. What concept of economics leads her to cut food support for poor children? What morality keeps her from denouncing a racist and hateful candidate for national office who attacks a Gold Star Mother?

Could it be cowardice? Does she believe in nothing at all? I don’t know and I never vote for nothing.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
