A dog repeatedly stabbed Wednesday during an incident in Vancouver is recovering from his wounds after successful surgery, according to a local veterinary hospital.

Hank, who was stabbed after a dispute between his owner and another person became physical, was treated for three stab wounds to the head and neck, according to an email Thursday from Columbia River Veterinary Specialists.

“Hank did well during surgery and was discharged today,” practice manager Crystal Ochsner said in the email. “He is the sweetest and most gentle dog, and we are so happy to be able to help him.”

Ochsner said Hank left the hospital with a special gift: a “Hank the Hero” cape.

“The owner … is so very grateful for the care that Hank has received and is happy to have his best friend at his side again,” Ochsner said.

The stabbing happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 3500 block of Harney Street, according to the Vancouver Police Department. Hank came to the aid of its owner during the dispute but did not attack.

The names of those involved in the incident were not released Wednesday, though Ochsner said the dog’s owner identified himself as Trip Black. Further information on the case was not available Thursday from the Vancouver Police Department.
