Letter: Dogs rely upon owners

A big thank you to Jan Perkins for her letter regarding Hunter, the dog recently picked up as a stray, cared for by the Humane Society of Southwest Washington, adopted by a caring family, and now, unfortunately, being returned to his original owner (“Be responsible with pets,” Aug. 25). Perkins’ comments were right on target.

The Humane Society of Southwest Washington sets protocols for valid reasons. The safety and care of the animals take priority, and their actions were entirely appropriate. It is clear that the dog’s owner, William Jones, had not provided Hunter with basic requirements, including environmental safety and adequate nutrition. These responsibilities lie entirely on Jones, whether Hunter is with him or with caregivers.

Even as a firefighter, as noble as this profession may be, Jones’ primary job is to make certain that his dog’s needs are met, as the dog depends on the accountability, vigilance, and commitment of his owner for life itself.
