TCC president to step down in January

Tacoma – The president of Tacoma Community College has resigned a month after faculty members criticized her leadership in a scathing letter.

The News Tribune reported that the college’s Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to approve a resignation agreement with Sheila Ruhland, who became president in March 2015. Ruhland will step down Jan. 13 and receive a financial settlement.

Ruhland’s spokeswoman declined to comment. Her attorney, John R. Wilson, said Ruhland and TCC agreed that it was in the best interest of the college for them to amicably part ways.

A majority of tenured faculty signed a letter last month that said Ruhland failed to notify staff and students of changes in the school’s accreditation status and that she showed a “pattern of racial insensitivity” in public interactions.
