Letter: Liberalism means progress

By Joseph R. Maurer, Vancouver

In response to Roy Schimelpfenig’s Jan. 24 letter, “Liberalism Steals Dreams,” I have to challenge Schimelpfenig to name one single conservative thought that has benefitted we the people. Here’s just some results of that liberalism he seems so desperate to malign:

1. The U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

2. The Emancipation Proclamation.

3. The 8-hour workday, overtime pay and federal minimum wage.

4. Child labor laws.

5. The GI Bill of Rights, first enacted in 1944, fostered the greatest period of economic growth in our history.

6. The Civil Rights Act of 1964.

7. The Social Security Act of 1935, which was expanded under Truman and LBJ.

8. Medicare, enacted in 1964.

9. The Clean Water Act in 1977.

10. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993.

11. The Rural Electrification Act of 1936.

Liberalism is responsible for more than 150 such acts, from the Declaration of Independence to Roosevelt’s National Parks to Johnson’s Civil Rights to The Affordable Care Act.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
