MEDFORD, Ore. — Oregon police say a former U.S. congressman was involved in a Medford car crash that killed a pedestrian.

The Mail Tribune reports that police say 84-year-old Bob Smith of Medford hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk while making a left turn on Monday.

Police say 58-year-old pedestrian Jerry Mark Hughes died at the scene.

Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau says Smith waited for police at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. Police say he was not intoxicated.

Budreau says investigators aren’t sure yet whether Smith had a green arrow or whether Hughes had a walk signal.

Smith represented Oregon’s 2nd district for 14 years. Before that, he was a state lawmaker.

A family member declined to comment on Smith’s behalf.
