Letter: Calculate debt figure for root cause

By David R. Jolivette, Washougal

In his Feb. 2 letter, “Liberalism means progress,” Joseph R. Maurer claimed 12 different acts were the result of liberals making progress, including the framework of the Constitution. The Constitution provides the rules of the political game. It is neither liberal or conservative.

Today’s liberal view of the Constitution rejects judicial restraint, economic cost of endless governmental regulation, and personal responsibility. The 12 acts listed in Maurer’s letter were not created by “today’s” progressive liberals. Politicians use acts to entice people with benefits, making them more government dependent. This does steal dreams and hopes.

There is not enough space here to go through his 12 miracle acts. I suggest he look up the cost of each act when initiated and where they are now, and how the programs have been expanded. The country is $19 trillion in debt, due to big government. Everyone who reads this should go to www.debtclock.org and understand those numbers.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
