Commute snarled; heavy rain may make it worse

Lots of rain predicted for this afternoon

Late to work this morning? You’re not the only one.

Helped along by wet, windy conditions, the rush hour crawl down Clark County’s freeways toward Portland was even slower than usual this morning. Traffic finally cleared by about 9:30, but was still very slow from about Delta Park to Interstate 405 in Portland.

Unfortunately the afternoon commute may be even worse. The National Weather Service in Portland predicts a miserable, though not epic, day for the Vancouver area. Showers and even thundershowers will move into the area, accompanied by winds 13 to 20 mph with some gusts near 31 mph. Up to a half inch of rain may fall by the end of today, adding to the 0.33 inch that fell in the 24 hours ended at 3:53 a.m. today.

The next day without the words “rain” or “showers” in the forecast is next Monday, when it is supposed to be mostly sunny, with temperatures in the mid-50s. That figures.

But, it is a great day to be in Maui today, where it will be mostly sunny and 81 degrees. I’s going to be 70 and sunny in Las Vegas, though no one goes there for the weather, and a pleasant 78 degrees and breezy in Palm Desert, Calif. And it is warm and dry in The Columbian’s newsroom.
