Save the Date: Horses, airplanes, mermaid on tap

Washington State Horse Expo continues with demonstration by national experts, demonstrations and vendors. Catch the preliminary rounds of the Extreme Cowboy Race, showcases by BlackPearl Friesian Dance Troupe and Volcano Mounted Archers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday. Admission is $11, $9 for seniors and youth, free for ages 7 and younger, $5 for parking. The Saturday Night Equine Extravaganza will start at 7 tonight, with a $5 admission, at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, 17402 N.E. Mark Smith and Karen Barrow of Century Aviation specialize in the rehabilitation of historic aircraft for museums and private displays. As part of the Aviation Lecture Series, “Old Planes — A Labor of Love,” they will talk about the restoration of various historic aircraft, from the famous Spruce Goose to the Pearson Air Museum’s soon-to-arrive DH-4 Liberty at 1 p.m. today at the Tex Rankin Theater, Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. More than 80 Washougal High School students will bring to life the beloved Disney film on the stage with “The Little Mermaid,” as Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder and more try to bridge the gap between sea and land. The production features songs from the film and Broadway production. The performance begins at 2 and 7 p.m. today, and continues at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26, and 1 and 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Washburn Performing Arts Center, 1201 39th St., Washougal. Want to explore more this spring? The Three Creeks Community Library, 800 N.E. Tenney Road, Vancouver, will host an Introduction to Geocaching from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 27. Participants can learn the basics of geocaching, an outdoor activity where hunters look for hidden containers or caches using navigational hints and GPS. The Native American Education Program Title VII hosts the annual Native American Traditional Pow Wow, as local Native American community members share traditional songs, dances and customs with the public. The event will feature 15 craft vendors and concessions selling fry bread and Indian tacos, starting at noon March 5 at Covington Middle School, 11200 N.E. Rosewood Road, Vancouver. Energy Events hosts the seventh annual Fort Vancouver Run, a scenic run through the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1001 E. Fifth St., Vancouver, with 5K and 12K routes, along with a kids’ race. Race proceeds will benefit the Fort Vancouver National Trust. The race will be followed by music, snacks and vendors. Race-day registration opens at 6:45 a.m. March 6, with race starting at 8 a.m., and kids’ race at 10 a.m. Registration is $45 to $50 for 5K, $50 to $55 for 12K, $18 for ages 8 to 18. energyevents.com

Shahala Middle School hosts ReadCon: A Sci-Fi Fantasy Family Night for the whole community, as it turns the library into a little comic convention with activities, crafts, trivia contests, book fair and collectibles. There will also be appearances by author Brian Tashima, “Secret of the Songshell,” Star Wars 501st Legion and the Superheroes Coalition. Donations benefit the library and Autism Empowerment.
