Letter: Ask Congress to reject TPP pact

Politics shouldn’t be a spectator sport — especially when the results truly matter. As attention is focused on the presidential debates, a critical issue is being overlooked by the public and the media.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership was recently signed in New Zealand by the U.S. and 11 other countries. If you haven’t heard much about it, you’re not alone. This so-called trade deal has been negotiated in secret, and Congress is not permitted to debate the merits of this all-encompassing agreement (remember Fast Track?). Multinational corporations have much to gain — and we have much to lose.

If you value American jobs, fair wages, affordable medications, safe food, consumer protections and environmental regulations, please get involved. Here is one informative link: www.citizen.org/TPP. If you believe in democratic government, now is the time to speak up. The TPP would allow more corporations to sue the U.S. over alleged lost profits (like TransCanada demanding $15 billion because the Keystone XL pipeline was rejected). Even worse, TPP’s private trade tribunals could circumvent our courts, laws and regulations — with no accountability to federal or local governments.

We cannot sit on the sidelines. Please urge your members of Congress to reject the TPP.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
