A man facing first-degree assault for allegedly striking another man with a steel bar in June was found guilty Friday of a lesser charge.

The Clark County Superior Court jury, instead, found Gerald L. Cameron, 41, guilty of fourth-degree assault, a gross misdemeanor. He was additionally found guilty of felony harassment-death threats. The jury found Cameron did not use a deadly weapon in the commission of the crime.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court, the assault occurred near state Highway 14 and Southeast Columbia House Boulevard.

Cameron, a transient, was accused of striking Gary J. Sommerville several times with a steel bar used to lift weights, hitting him in the head, arms and torso. The victim reported having numerous cuts and a gash to his head, as well as a concussion, the affidavit said.

The jury was given several optional verdicts to deliberate, including the original charge and two lesser-included charges — second- and fourth-degree assault. Cameron was found not guilty of the more serious assaults.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 20.
