I live in Carter Park and have had bird feeders for 15 years. There have been a few occasions I had to take the feeders away as sick birds showed up. These last two to three months, I have had wave after wave of sick and dying birds. I do what the Audubon Society recommends, which is to take down all feeders for at least two weeks and clean up any seed on the ground. When birds flock together to feed they pass disease through dropping contaminated seed. I know they’re not getting sick at my feeders.
I would ask people in the Carter Park and Hough neighborhoods to take down their feeders and do a cleanup. Birds will continue to die if they feed at sites that are contaminated. There will continue to be big die-offs if something isn’t done. I hate not being able to feed in the winter. I have three feeders and can have as many as 40 birds at one time.
