Customers ask McDonald’s: Where’s the cheese?

CHICAGO — Where’s the cheese, McDonald’s?

That’s what some of the Chicago-based burger chain’s customers were wondering on social media recently after ordering mozzarella sticks that arrived cheeseless.

A slew of McDonald’s customers have taken to Twitter, blasting the restaurant and posting photos of hollowed-out cheese sticks.

“Hahaha McDonald’s mozzarella sticks are a joke. They don’t even have cheese in them McDonalds,” wrote v — emory.

“My girl got mozzarella sticks from McDonald’s and they gave her them with no cheese McDonalds y’all slacking,” wrote AntoineFulton.

Others tweeted about their disappointment in getting Chicken McNuggets in a Mozzarella Sticks box. “McDonalds Wow these mozzarella sticks look an awful lot like chicken nuggets .,” wrote Ptrujillo17.

McDonald’s apologized for the furor Thursday, saying the cheese must have melted out of its breaded casing during the baking process.

“We are aware of a low volume of guest concerns about our Mozzarella Cheese Sticks,” spokeswoman Lisa McComb said in an emailed statement. “In these instances, we believe the cheese melted out during the baking process in our kitchens and shouldn’t have been served. We apologize to any customers who may have been affected. We are working to fix this in our restaurants.”

The Twitter rage for Mozzarella Stick-Gate is a far cry from the social media acclaim McDonald’s received late last year when it announced plans to add the 3-for-$1 mozzarella sticks to the menu. Throngs of people virtually cheered, from celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres to common folk.

Just a thought: Maybe the cheeseless sticks are McDonald’s way to help customers cut calories. The three-piece serving of mozzarella sticks — with cheese in them — has 200 calories. And really, who’s gonna eat just three?
