Letter: Don’t minimize impact of spills

By Dan Banks, VANCOUVER
Published: July 9, 2016, 6:00am

Todd Schatzki, apologist for the Tesoro/Savage proposed oil terminal stated that “When an oil spill occurs, new economic activity occurs to clean up contaminated areas, remediate affected properties, and supply equipment for cleanup activities.” (“Expert downplays effects of oil spills,” July 2, The Columbian.)

By that logic, we should be burning down houses on a regular basis so that new economic activity would occur in cleaning up the mess and rebuilding the houses. How much sense does that make?

And you will also notice that he said “when” not “if” an oil spill occurs. You can ask the people of Valdez and the Gulf of Mexico how the mitigation is doing for them.
