Letter: Stop drug use at the start

By Amann Au, VANCOUVER
Published: July 10, 2016, 6:00am

Recently, my mom and I were leaving a restaurant when we spotted a young man smoking marijuana. As we left the plaza, the man collapsed on the ground. How would you feel if this was your child? This is an extremely important problem because if there are many people addicted to harmful drugs, less people will get jobs and it is literally killing the future of our world.

All drug use must be stopped at its source and where it is seen. Some causes of this problem are legal “gateway” drugs and insufficient enforcement of drug laws.

One solution is to petition against these “lesser” drugs as people progressively become addicted to worse drugs until they die. By eliminating these “gateways,” the number of drug users will decrease.

Another solution is to increase enforcement of existing drug laws by destroying illegal operations. This will stop illegal drugs from ever reaching potential recipients.

Some argue that drugs are like alcohol, and the government should not regulate it, but alcohol is not extremely addictive like drugs and it is not as harmful. So please, if you care about the future of society, petition gateway drugs and voice the need to increase enforcement of drug laws.
