Baltimore – Prosecutors made their final effort Thursday to convince a judge that the highest-ranking officer charged in Freddie Gray’s death committed a crime, saying that Lt. Brian Rice intentionally failed to safely secure Gray in a police van because he wanted to “punish and humiliate” him.

But defense attorneys argued that Rice, 42, acted as any reasonable officer would have, loading Gray into the van without a seat belt because the 25-year-old was combative and officers were wary of the crowd that had gathered to witness his arrest.
