Letter: Propaganda from tragedy

By Wilbur Wood, VANCOUVER
Published: July 14, 2016, 6:00am

The July 1 Associated Press story “Palestinian kills Israeli girl, 13, sleeping in her bedroom,” is using a real tragedy for propaganda purposes. The murder was totally wrong, but the story is wrong from its headline to the last sentence.

She was not in Israel. She was sleeping in a bedroom in a house on property stolen from its Palestinian owners. Picking up on this event the Israeli propaganda machine made an international event out of the tragedy, ignoring facts such as that 108 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis since Oct. 1.

But the death of this one girl gets quotes from the U.S. State Department, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and some other Israelis. The final comment, made by Israeli Cabinet Minister Uri Ariel, was that “Israel would make ‘every effort’ to expand its settlements in the West Bank,” or, in other words, that they should steal more Palestinian land.

This is propaganda, not well-balanced reporting.
