Letter: Vote against Initiative 732

By John Williamson, SALMON CREEK
Published: July 23, 2016, 6:00am

With regard to Initiative 732, what Ed Griffith failed to mention in his July 15 letter, “Lead the way with carbon tax,” is the much higher utility rates that will be incurred by John Q. Taxpayer. Utilities operate on a cost-plus basis, therefore if they are forced to convert plants, pay fines, etc., this will mean much higher utility bills. He mentioned the reduction in sales tax, but how long will that last? I’m not opposed to wind or solar power, but we need it all, so don’t penalize rate payers with a carbon tax.

I would also say this initiative is a jobs killer, and not a jobs creator.

I agree with Griffith that Washington would be the only state with a carbon tax, but I’m not about to walk outside and blast my foot with a shotgun just to say I’m the only one in my neighborhood to do that. Vote “No” on I-732.
