MONROE — Authorities say a 26-year-old inmate at a prison north of Seattle was taken to a hospital after three other prisoners assaulted him.

The Daily Herald reports  the assault was reported Wednesday evening in a living area at the state Monroe Correctional Complex.

Prison spokeswoman Susan Biller says the incident initially involved one offender assaulting another when two others joined in.

Police reports say the man was beaten in the head. He was treated at a local hospital and returned to the prison.

All four men involved were placed in segregation units and all prison units operated as usual Thursday.

Authorities are investigating.
