Andrew Johnson was asked to take over the Woodland boys basketball summer program after the head coach took another job.
It turns out, Johnson got a lot more than a summer gig.
Johnson is expected to be named the head coach of the program at next month’s school board meeting, according to Paul Huddleston, the school’s athletic director.
Johnson, an assistant with Woodland last year, took the lead of the summer program after Jason Buffum left his position in June to coach the Ridgefield Spudders.
“The kids bought in right away,” Johnson said. “That was huge, having them have that trust in me.
“It was only a month, but in that month we got a lot of stuff done.”
Enough to impress the Woodland administration.
“Andrew has a genuine passion for developing the whole athlete, and he aligns perfectly with what we are striving to accomplish at WHS,” Huddleston wrote in a release.
Johnson also is an assistant coach with the Woodland football and track and field teams. Prior to working at Woodland last year, he was an assistant coach at La Center High School.
A graduate of La Center, he played basketball for Forbes Lapp and football under John Lambert — people he says were great influences on his coaching career.
