SALEM, Ore. — A Marion County woman who shot and killed her husband in December has been sentenced to five years of probation.
Carolyn DiMatteo, 63, was sentenced on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide, The Statesman Journal reported. In addition to probation, DiMatteo has been ordered to complete 60 hours of community service and to pay $200 in fines and $1,045 in victim restitution.
DiMatteo was arrested Dec. 26 after calling 911 and saying she had shot and killed her husband, Joseph DiMatteo, 69, at their trailer near Lyons.
According to court documents, DiMatteo told investigators that her husband was yelling at her and went for a gun in their cupboard. She said she retrieved the gun first and shot him. She said she did not intend to kill her husband.
At sentencing, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Dale Penn said DiMatteo’s long, documented history as a victim of domestic violence was one of the factors that swayed him to grant her probation instead of prison time.
