MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota will award a posthumous honorary degree to music legend Prince.

The university’s 12 regents voted unanimously Friday to bestow a College of Liberal Arts degree to Prince Rogers Nelson, who made his home in Minnesota.

University president, Eric Kaler, said in a statement that the process for awarding the degree to Prince began even before his April 21 death. Kaler says Minnesotans and people around the world are celebrating Prince’s life and contributions. The university says arrangements for ceremoniously awarding the degree are pending.

Prince died from an accidental overdose of the narcotic painkiller fentanyl.
