EVERETT — The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians has pledged $400,000 toward a political campaign to raise the sales tax in Snohomish County for public-safety needs.
The Daily Herald reports that in all, the campaign received a half-million dollars in pledged donations last month, with the largest promise coming from the tribe.
Stillaguamish Chairman Shawn Yanity says he and other tribal leaders want more deputies on the streets and more social services to help with mental illness, addition and homelessness.
Voters will consider the measure on Aug. 2. If passed, the proposition would at 2 cents to a $10 purchase everywhere in the county, starting Jan. 1. The increase is expected to generate $25 million per year in revenue.
