Everett – The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians has pledged $400,000 toward a political campaign to raise the sales tax in Snohomish County for public-safety needs.

The Daily Herald reported that in all, the campaign received a half-million dollars in pledged donations last month, with the largest promise coming from the tribe.

Stillaguamish Chairman Shawn Yanity said he and other tribal leaders want more deputies on the streets and more social services to help with mental illness, addiction and homelessness.

Voters will consider the measure on Aug. 2. If passed, the proposition would add 2 cents to a $10 purchase everywhere in the county, starting Jan. 1.
