Letter: A gun ban doesn’t eliminate threat

I don’t agree with those who say we should ban the sale of military-style assault weapons because I don’t think that will solve the problem. There are more than 5 million of those rifles already in circulation. How do you stop those already out there from being used? The only way to eliminate their possible use would be to confiscate them. Lest you forget your history, the British army marched on Concord in April 1775 to confiscate the weapons of colonists. That didn’t work out so well for the British, and it started the war for independence.

One other bit of history that should not be forgotten. The largest mass murder by gunfire in the U.S. happened on Dec. 29, 1890. Two hundred and ninety-seven Native Americans were killed by the U.S. military at Wounded Knee in an attempt to take their weapons.

How about we all agree the real threat is from a group of people who just don’t like us? They don’t like our belief systems. We may not be a perfect nation but we are a whole lot better than what they offer. How about we stay focused and use our energy on those who would do us harm, no matter what method they chose?
