Park seeks input on imperiled chalet

Olympia – Olympia National Park officials are working on a final plan for a historic chalet that’s being threatened by a river in a remote wilderness area.

The Enchanted Valley Chalet had been moved 100 feet from the eroding edge of the Quinault River in 2014. Since then, the gap between the structure and the river has been narrowed by about 30 feet.

Park officials are asking the public whether they should construct a new foundation under the building or dismantle it. A third option being proposed requires no action, allowing the river to naturally take its toll on the chalet.

The park is accepting comments through Aug. 31.
